Treatment Options for Sweaty Feet

The foot contains approximately 250,000 sweat glands that keep the feet and blood cool when body temperature rises. The eccrine sweat glands, which are particular to the feet, release water that evaporates as a cooling method. In fact, the sweat glands in the feet can produce up to a half pint of sweat in one day. However, when these glands produce an overabundance of sweat, the resulting condition is called plantar hyperhidrosis, or sweaty feet. This can be disturbing physically, emotionally, and medically. One of the side effects of hyperhidrosis of the feet is the risk of infections from bacteria and fungi, which thrive in moist, warm conditions. The cause of hyperhidrosis of the feet is not yet known, but there are methods that can help to reduce the symptoms. Among them are keeping the feet clean and dry on a daily basis, and wearing shoes and socks that are made of breathable materials. Alternating pairs of shoes is recommended, which can allow them thoroughly dry before wearing them again. Certain antiperspirant lotions and powders also may help. Hyperhidrosis of the Feet

Treatment Options for Turf Toe Injury

Turf toe is an injury that affects the base of the big toe, which is termed the first metatarsophalangeal, or MTP joint. It occurs from repeatedly overstretching that joint. This is a common injury among football or soccer players, and dancers who frequently overextend the MTP joint with the heels raised.  Turf toe is considered to be a toe sprain, and ignoring it can be detrimental to continuing your sport. Resting the toe is essential, but more serious treatment options may be required in order for the MTP joint to fully heal and activity to resume. A visit to a podiatrist may involve ultrasound or electric stimulation techniques, as well as prescribing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication to reduce pain. In many cases, being fitted for an orthotic shoe insert may be deemed necessary. In extreme cases, surgery is recommended to repair any tears, fractures, or other joint damage. Cuboid Syndrome Risk Factors

Although cuboid syndrome may not be as well-known as conditions such as plantar fasciitis to novices to the field of podiatry, it is still a widespread foot condition that is important to be aware of. Cuboid syndrome can develop in an individual when the cuboid bone, located on the outside of the center of the foot, moves out of alignment. As a result, a patient may experience some amount of pain. There are several risk factors that are associated with cuboid syndrome, which may make an individual more predisposed to developing the condition. Namely, being overweight can increase one’s chance of developing cuboid syndrome. Also, spraining the foot or training on surfaces that are uneven can increase the risk of cuboid syndrome. Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.

Exercise and Stronger Feet

Raising the heels while keeping the toes on the floor, followed by reversing the order can be successful in stretching the feet. Each position can be repeated several times until a good stretch is felt. A toe splay is done when the heels remain on the floor with the toes spread apart. This can be repeated up to ten times. The sole can be strengthened by crossing one leg over the opposite knee and pulling the toes back toward the shin. There are numerous stretches and foot exercises that are easy to perform.
