Plantar fasciitis develops when the plantar fascia becomes irritated and causes heel pain. This strong band of tissue runs along the bottom of the foot and helps support the arch. Symptoms often include sharp heel pain with the first steps after waking or sitting. Some people also notice aching after standing or walking for long periods.
Several factors can contribute to plantar fasciitis. Wearing unsupportive footwear every day may place repeated stress on the plantar fascia. Shoes with worn soles, poor arch support, or limited cushioning may not provide enough protection during daily activities. Tight shoes can also affect comfort and walking patterns. Other risk factors include increased activity, prolonged standing, and certain foot structures.
Routine footwear can have a long-term impact when it does not match your foot's needs. Continually wearing shoes that lack support may contribute to repeated strain and discomfort. Changing shoes regularly and choosing comfortable footwear with appropriate support helps reduce unnecessary stress. A podiatrist can also evaluate your foot structure, walking pattern, and symptoms. Treatment may include activity changes, supportive footwear, or custom orthotics, when appropriate.
When plantar fasciitis causes ongoing pain, a podiatrist will first examine the foot and discuss your symptoms and daily activities. Imaging tests may be recommended when another condition needs to be ruled out. Treatment focuses on reducing irritation and supporting healing. Follow-up visits allow the podiatrist to monitor progress and adjust care as needed. Early attention can help prevent persistent heel pain from interfering with daily life. This can make returning to activities more manageable and comfortable. If you have heel pain, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can accurately diagnose and treat plantar fasciitis.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.
What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?
- Excessive running
- Having high arches in your feet
- Other foot issues such as flat feet
- Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
- Being on your feet very often
There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.
Prevention
- Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
- Maintain a healthy weight
- If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain
There are a variety of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis along with the pain that accompanies it. Additionally, physical therapy is a very important component in the treatment process. It is important that you meet with your podiatrist to determine which treatment option is best for you.
