Bone spurs Q & A

What are bone spurs?

Bone spurs are growths of extra bone that usually appear on the edges of bones. They can grow on nearly any bone but are most common where two bones rub together (joints) and spinal vertebrae. In the feet, bone spurs can occur in the following areas.

The heel

Bone spurs in the heel (heel spurs) frequently appear at the same time as plantar fasciitis, a condition in which the ligament spanning the bottom of your foot grows inflamed and painful.

The big toe joint

The main big toe joint, which is the site for most bunions, can develop bone spurs because of joint friction.

Bone spurs may also develop in the toes or other joints in your feet or ankles.

What are the symptoms of bone spurs?

Most bone spurs don’t cause any symptoms for example, only 5% of people with heel spurs experience pain because of the bone spur. Because bone spurs are usually a reaction to another problem in the foot (for example, osteoarthritis or plantar fasciitis), any symptoms that you experience are usually due to that other condition.

But, in rare cases, bone spurs can cause problems like heel pain and difficulty walking, particularly if they grow very large. Or, a bone spur may develop in an area where it pressures the tissue nearby to cause nerve pain or other problems.

Many people find out that they have bone spurs only because they need imaging tests to diagnose another problem, such as osteoarthritis in the feet.

How are bone spurs treated?

NYC Footcare PC offers both conservative and surgical approaches for bone spurs. Treatment focuses on the underlying cause of your bone spurs or the condition associated with them. Some of the main noninvasive treatment options include:

  • Custom orthotics
  • Night splint
  • Shoe changes
  • Stretching exercises
  • Oral medication

If you have chronic foot or ankle pain because of arthritis or another chronic condition, the NYC Footcare PC team might recommend surgery. The team performs foot and ankle surgery in their state-of-the-art facility in Fair Lawn, New Jersey.

In many cases, the team can use a minimally invasive technique with small incisions to effectively treat your bone spurs and related issues.
