Foot and Ankle Injuries in Skateboarding

Skateboarding is a thrilling sport that demands agility, balance, and skill. However, it also comes with the risk of foot and ankle injuries that can sideline enthusiasts. These injuries range from minor sprains to more severe fractures, impacting both beginners and seasoned riders alike. Common injuries include ankle sprains, which occur when the ligaments supporting the ankle are stretched or torn due to sudden twists or falls. Fractures, particularly in the foot and ankle bones, can result from high-impact collisions or failed landings. Additionally, overuse injuries, such as tendonitis and stress fractures, can develop from repetitive strain on the feet and ankles. Proper protective gear, including sturdy shoes and ankle braces, can help lower the risk of injuries while skateboarding. Furthermore, mastering fundamental techniques and gradually progressing to more advanced maneuvers can reduce the likelihood of accidents. By understanding the potential risks and taking preventive measures, skateboarders can enjoy their passion while minimizing the chance of foot and ankle injuries. If you have endured a foot or ankle injury for any reason, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can effectively treat these types of injuries.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with Dr. Paul Drucker from NYC Foot Care, PC. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Plantar fasciitis, a prevalent foot condition, can cause discomfort and hinder daily activities if left unaddressed. Recognizing its common symptoms is key to seeking appropriate treatment and finding relief. One hallmark symptom is heel pain, typically occurring with the first steps in the morning or after periods of rest. This pain may subside as the day progresses but can return after prolonged standing or walking. Additionally, individuals with plantar fasciitis often experience pain along the arch of the foot, which may feel sharp or stabbing in nature. Tightness and stiffness in the affected foot, particularly after periods of inactivity, are also common. Swelling and tenderness in the heel or arch area may accompany these symptoms. Some individuals may notice a decrease in their range of motion or difficulty flexing the foot upwards. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment to alleviate discomfort and prevent worsening of the condition.

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that is often caused by a strain injury. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Dr. Paul Drucker from NYC Foot Care, PC. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Prevention

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain

There are a variety of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis along with the pain that accompanies it. Additionally, physical therapy is a very important component in the treatment process. It is important that you meet with your podiatrist to determine which treatment option is best for you.

Erythromelalgia's Impact on the Feet

Erythromelalgia, a rare disorder that primarily affects the feet, casts a shadow over the lives of those afflicted. It is thought to occur as a result of the dysfunction of certain blood vessels that may lead to abnormal blood flow affecting the feet. In this condition, the feet endure excruciating pain and inflammation, often described as burning, stabbing, or throbbing sensations. Despite its rarity, erythromelalgia's effects are profound, disrupting daily routines and causing immense discomfort. Affected individuals may find solace only in cooling measures, as warmth exacerbates symptoms. The distinctive symptom of this disorder lies in the visible manifestation on the feet, which is a striking redness and warmth, similar to a fiery glow, that distinguishes it from other ailments. Walking, standing, or even wearing shoes become arduous tasks, imposing significant limitations on mobility and quality of life. Understanding the nuances of erythromelalgia is imperative, shedding light on its silent but profound impact on the feet and the lives it touches. If you or someone you know is affected by this rare foot disease, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you manage this painful condition.

Some foot conditions may require additional professional care. If you have any concerns, contact Dr. Paul Drucker of NYC Foot Care, PC. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Rare Foot Conditions

The majority of foot conditions are common and can be treated by a podiatrist.  Standard diagnostic procedures are generally used to identify specific conditions and treatment can be rendered. A podiatrist also treats rare foot conditions which can be difficult to diagnose and may need extra attention and care.

There are many rare foot conditions that can affect children. Some of these can include:

  • Freiberg’s disease
  • Kohler’s disease
  • Maffucci syndrome

Freiberg’s disease - This can be seen as a deterioration and flattening of a metatarsal bone that exists in the ball of the foot. It typically affects pre-teen and teenage girls, but can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms that can accompany this can be swelling, stiffness, and the patient may limp.

Kohler’s disease - This often targets the bone in the arch of the foot and affects younger boys. It can lead to an interruption of the blood supply which ultimately can lead to bone deterioration. The patient may limp or experience tenderness, swelling, and redness.

Maffucci syndrome - This affects the long bones in a child’s foot leading to the development of abnormal bone lesions. They are benign growths and typically develop in early childhood and the bones may be susceptible to breaking.

A podiatrist can properly diagnose and treat all types of rare foot conditions. If your child is affected by any of these symptoms or conditions, please don’t hesitate to call our office so the correct treatment method can begin.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in 70th Street Manhattan, 60th Street Manhattan, Jamaica, Queens, Plainview, NY and Fair Lawn, NJ . We offer the newest diagnostic tools and technology to treat your foot and ankle needs.

Athlete's Foot May Be Linked to Hygiene

Athlete's foot, a fungal infection affecting the skin of the feet, is often closely intertwined with hygiene practices. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, making sweaty socks and tight shoes ideal breeding grounds. Poor foot hygiene, such as infrequent washing or drying between toes, exacerbates the risk of infection. Additionally, walking barefoot in shared spaces like gym showers or swimming pools increases exposure to the fungus. Athletes, hence the name, are particularly susceptible due to prolonged periods of sweaty feet and communal locker rooms. Symptoms include itching, burning, and cracked skin, often between the toes or on the soles of the feet. Fortunately, maintaining good foot hygiene can help prevent athlete's foot. Regularly wash and thoroughly dry feet, especially between the toes, and wear clean, breathable socks and shoes, it is helpful to avoid sharing footwear or walking barefoot in public areas. If you have developed athlete’s foot, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can offer you effective medication for treatment.

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is often an uncomfortable condition to experience. Thankfully, podiatrists specialize in treating athlete’s foot and offer the best treatment options. If you have any questions about athlete’s foot, consult with Dr. Paul Drucker from NYC Foot Care, PC. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality treatment.

What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Tinea pedis, more commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a non-serious and common fungal infection of the foot. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be contracted by touching someone who has it or infected surfaces. The most common places contaminated by it are public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools. Once contracted, it grows on feet that are left inside moist, dark, and warm shoes and socks.

Prevention

The most effective ways to prevent athlete’s foot include:

  • Thoroughly washing and drying feet
  • Avoid going barefoot in locker rooms and public showers
  • Using shower shoes in public showers
  • Wearing socks that allow the feet to breathe
  • Changing socks and shoes frequently if you sweat a lot

Symptoms

Athlete’s foot initially occurs as a rash between the toes. However, if left undiagnosed, it can spread to the sides and bottom of the feet, toenails, and if touched by hand, the hands themselves. Symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Scaly and peeling skin

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is quick and easy. Skin samples will be taken and either viewed under a microscope or sent to a lab for testing. Sometimes, a podiatrist can diagnose it based on simply looking at it. Once confirmed, treatment options include oral and topical antifungal medications.

A Surgical Solution for Ingrown Toenails

When faced with the discomfort and pain of ingrown toenails, seeking relief becomes a priority. For many individuals, surgical intervention offers a lasting solution. The procedure begins with a thorough examination by a trained podiatrist. After assessing the severity of the condition, the patient is prepared for surgery, typically under local anesthesia. With precision and care, the podiatrist removes the ingrown portion of the nail to prevent future regrowth. The process may involve removing the entire nail or just a portion, depending on the extent of the ingrowth. Once the part of the toenail is removed, the podiatrist may apply a chemical solution or perform a matrixectomy to prevent regrowth. Following the procedure, patients are advised on proper post-operative care, which may include keeping the area clean, applying antibiotic ointment, and wearing appropriate footwear. If you have an ingrown toenail, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can discuss whether surgery options are right for you.

Foot surgery is sometimes necessary to treat a foot ailment. To learn more, contact Dr. Paul Drucker of NYC Foot Care, PC. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Foot and ankle surgery is generally reserved for cases in which less invasive, conservative procedures have failed to alleviate the problem. Some of the cases in which surgery may be necessary include:

  • Removing foot deformities like bunions and bone spurs
  • Severe arthritis that has caused bone issues
  • Cosmetic reconstruction

What Types of Surgery Are There?

The type of surgery you receive will depend on the nature of the problem you have. Some of the possible surgeries include:

  • Bunionectomy for painful bunions
  • Surgical fusion for realignment of bones
  • Neuropathy decompression surgery to treat nerve damage

Benefits of Surgery

Although surgery is usually a last resort, it can provide more complete pain relief compared to non-surgical methods and may allow you to finally resume full activity.

Surgical techniques have also become increasingly sophisticated. Techniques like endoscopic surgery allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times.
